RESEARCH STREAM

Disaster Mental Health and Wellbeing

Australia has endured many major disasters over recent years, including the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, and the catastrophic floods of 2022. These have been compounded by the pervasive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are meeting the challenges of an increasingly hazardous environment and future through an expanding program of policy-relevant research on disaster mental health. This includes both quantitative and qualitative studies of the experiences and needs of disaster-impacted communities and vulnerable groups as well as service-level responses. It also looks at recovery-oriented interventions and programs that are focused on improving mental health and adjustment in the aftermath of disaster.
